Most cannabis users have heard of the phrase ‘wake and bake’ at least once during their lifetime. But what’s the hype? What’s the strange attraction between caffeine and cannabis? For some, they can’t imagine starting their day without the help of cannabis or coffee–or both! If you are curious about the connection between caffeine and cannabis, keep reading!
The Science Behind Caffeine and Cannabis
Caffeine’s effects on the molecular level in the body are similar to those of cannabis. We know that caffeine interacts with adenosine receptors in our central nervous systems, stimulating a variety of body systems and releasing neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, giving it its stimulating properties.
While cannabis research is increasing, in general, these days, there aren’t many thorough studies on the link between cannabis and caffeine in humans. We may never know why a morning cup of coffee tastes so good when cannabis is added to the routine. Scientists often have limited research budgets and licensing constraints, which may be a result of less research being done on this topic. However, a study from 2012 revealed some interesting information relating to THC effects mimicking those of caffeine. In the study, researchers trained squirrel monkeys to self-administer THC. Researchers saw a drop in the monkeys’ THC consumption when they were given a low dose of a chemical that mimicked the effects of caffeine. The monkeys used a lot more THC when the dose of the caffeine-like molecule was tripled.

What are the Benefits of Combining Cannabis & Caffeine?
Did you know that combining cannabis with a tiny bit of coffee can help you get a longer “high”? According to studies, mixing cannabis with a trace amount of caffeine can help to prolong the benefits of cannabis. This means that the same results can be obtained while consuming less cannabis.
Cannabis and coffee share another trait in that they are both “euphoric.” Both cannabis and caffeine raise dopamine levels in the body. Dopamine is commonly referred to as the “happy hormone.” When the two are combined, the effects are amplified, providing consumers an uplifting and euphoric boost. Consider pairing your morning cup of coffee with your favorite daytime strain of marijuana the next time you want to improve your morning routine and receive an extra surge of energy.
