A cultivation facility is an entity that is authorized to cultivate, process, and package cannabis and sell it to retail cannabis stores, cannabis product manufacturing facilities, and other cannabis cultivation facilities, but not directly to consumers.
Once the cannabis is cultivated/processed, it is tested, and finally packaged before being sent out to dispensaries, such as South Dakota’s first medical marijuana dispensary, From The Hills, which opened its doors to patients on April 30th, 2022 in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Cannabis Testing
There are two main reasons medical marijuana is tested in a licensed testing facility before being sold to patients.
The first reason is to verify that the products are safe for human consumption. The next is to give patients an idea of the potency of the product they are using.
A cannabis testing facility does just that! It is an entity licensed to analyze and certify the safety and potency of medical marijuana. The testing facility in South Dakota is Cannabis Chem Lab which is located in Flandreau, South Dakota.
Cannabis Chem Lab was founded on November 13, 2020. Their mission is to ensure the safety and accuracy of recreational and medical cannabis products, with the goal to certify every cannabis product sold in South Dakota.
Each certification includes a certificate of analysis aka ‘COA’, so the consumers know exactly what they are getting. This analysis is backed up by pending certifications from federal departments such as the Drug Enforcement Agency and the United States Department of Agriculture; as well as private certifications such as A2LA ISO:17025.
