Cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) and cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) are the receptors that govern the behavioral consequences of cannabis when taken.CB1 receptors are found in the brain and throughout the body, but CB2 receptors are predominantly found in the immunological and gastrointestinal systems; although CB2 receptors are found in the brain as well, they are not as densely expressed as CB1 receptors.

THC (the psychoactive component of cannabis) binds to the CB1 receptor more tightly than the CB2 receptor. When patients feel ‘high’ it is because their body’s CB1 receptors are bonding to the THC, activating psychoactive effects. Meanwhile, CBD works differently in the body and does not leave patients feeling the psychoactive effects of cannabis, although still delivering desirable results. CBD can work well to treat inflammation, which is often associated with chronic or debilitating pain.
