Treating Chronic Pain With Medical Marijuana In South Dakota

Medical Marijuana for Chronic Pain South Dakota

Those suffering from chronic pain in South Dakota can now find relief with medical marijuana.

Did you know that chronic pain affects more than 50 million Americans? Cannabis for the treatment of chronic or debilitating pain is a hybrid of pharmaceutical and alternative medicine. Opioids are typically a common therapy choice for those suffering from chronic pain. However, as the opioid epidemic continues to claim lives due to prescription medicine overdoses (May 10, 2022 marks the launch of the first-ever National Fentanyl Awareness Day) more people are turning to cannabis to find relief.

Chronic pain covers a wide variety of medical conditions, so it is one of the most common qualifying conditions among patients in South Dakota. Keep reading to learn how medical marijuana helps treat chronic pain, and how to get your medical marijuana card in South Dakota to start treating your chronic pain today.

How Does Medical Marijuana Help Treat Chronic Pain?

With the passage of the Compassionate Use Act, California became the first state to allow legal access to and use of botanical cannabis for therapeutic purposes under physician supervision. As of 2021, a total of 36 states have legalized marijuana for medical purposes, South Dakota being one of them. Despite the hurdles of research on the effectiveness of cannabis since the U.S. still considers marijuana a Schedule 1 drug (even though it is legal for medical use in more than half of the U.S.), numerous research on the effectiveness of medicinal cannabis in treating chronic pain has been conducted over the years. Various studies have looked at how cannabis has reduced the use of opioids to treat chronic pain, how cannabis has decreased pain in those suffering from neuropathic pain, back pain, arthritis, post-surgical pain, headaches, and abdominal pain, and how cannabis can be dosed correctly to treat chronic pain.

How Cannabis Works In The Body To Treat Chronic Pain

Did you know that Chronic Pain was the primary symptom for which the evidence supporting the use of cannabis medicines was rated as ‘strong’ in the 2017 National Academics report? With cannabis being shown so effective in treating qualifying conditions such as chronic or debilitating pain, it’s important to understand how cannabis works in the body.

Everyone has an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in their body, this is the system that tells us how cannabis works and why it makes us feel the way it does. The ECS works by using the cannabinoid receptors found in select tissues. There are at least two types of cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found in the central nervous system (brain and nerves of the spinal cord), while CB2 receptors are found in the peripheral nervous system (nerves in your limbs), the digestive system, and specific immune cells. Cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) and cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) are the receptors that govern the behavioral consequences of cannabis when taken.CB1 receptors are found in the brain and throughout the body, but CB2 receptors are predominantly found in the immunological and gastrointestinal systems; although CB2 receptors are found in the brain as well, they are not as densely expressed as CB1 receptors.

The most common naturally occurring cannabinoids you need to know about are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC (the psychoactive component of cannabis) binds to the CB1 receptor more tightly than the CB2 receptor. When patients feel ‘high’ it is because their body’s CB1 receptors are bonding to the THC, activating psychoactive effects. Meanwhile, CBD works differently in the body and does not leave patients feeling the psychoactive effects of cannabis, although still delivering desirable results. CBD can work well to treat inflammation, which is often associated with chronic or debilitating pain. As you can see, medical marijuana products are obvious targets for possible treatments such as chronic pain, since they promote ECS activity. Cannabis works differently for everyone, as no one ESC is the same so it is important to explore different options with your physician during your medical marijuana card evaluation, such as mixed ratio products, for treating pain relief.
