Alabama Issues 20 Cannabis Business Licenses

Cannabis Business Licenses

Third Times The Charm

Alabama has recently granted 20 medical cannabis business licenses to a range of entities, including dispensaries, cultivators, processors, transportation providers, and testing labs. The licenses were issued by the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC), marking the third attempt by the commission to distribute licenses for medical marijuana businesses.

The announcement, made on Friday, comes after previous attempts faced legal challenges and industry opposition. In June, the initial licensing round was nullified due to lawsuits claiming inconsistencies in the scoring methodology used by the University of South Alabama cannabis commission application. The second attempt in August was revoked following lawsuits filed by unsuccessful applicants.

The 20 businesses awarded licenses in the latest round must submit relevant fees by December 15. Concurrently, those denied licenses can request an investigative hearing before the AMCC for reconsideration on the same date.

Integrated facility licenses for larger companies and multistate operators are scheduled to be issued on December 12, a category that has been a focal point of many legal disputes. The AMCC has received 38 applications for integrated facilities but can only award a maximum of five under state law.

Physicians are set to begin certifying medical marijuana patients once the business licenses are officially issued. Medical marijuana production is expected to commence in early January, approximately 28 days after the licenses are granted.
