Following the lead of 35 other states, three territories, and the District of Columbia, Alabama recently legalized its own medical marijuana program in 2021. At this point, officials are still hashing out the details and expect to open the market to patients sometime between late 2023 and early 2024. Keep reading for all the details about the program, its requirements, and how you can secure your Alabama medical marijuana card so you’re ready when the market opens.

The Latest Updates on Medical Marijuana in Alabama

Alabama’s Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) is currently receiving applications from businesses and individuals interested in cultivating, processing, and/or selling medical cannabis. Per SB 46, the state was required to have the regulatory and infrastructure framework for the medical marijuana program set by September 1st, 2022. Between then and October 17, 2022, the state allowed businesses and individuals to request applications. Those applications were sent out on October 24, 2022, and they’re due back to the AMCC by December 30, 2022.

Once the AMCC receives all applications, they can begin the review and approval process. At this time, they plan to issue a limited number of licenses statewide, with a cap on 37 total dispensaries across the state. Other licenses to be issued include:

• 12 cultivators licenses
• Four processors licenses
• Four dispensary licenses (each license can operate three dispensary locations)
• Five integrated facility licenses (each license can operate five dispensary locations)
• An unspecified number for secure transport and state testing lab licenses

When Will Medical Dispensaries Open in Alabama?

Alabama will announce the applicants chosen to receive medical dispensary licenses, as well as all other licenses of their medical program, on June 12, 2023. Those that are chosen will have until June 26, 2023 to pay the license fee. Official licenses will then be issued on July 10, 2023.

Alabama will have up to 37 licensed medical marijuana dispensaries allowed to open on July 10, 2023. Whether or not they open their doors on that date will depend on their preparedness.

Alabama Medical Marijuana Program Details

Requirements

To obtain your medical marijuana card in Alabama, you must be a legal resident of the state and age 19 or older, not 18, as in most other states.

Qualifying Conditions

Qualifying conditions for a medical marijuana card in Alabama are:

• Spasticity
• Terminal illness

It’s best to have your documentation or medical proof of your qualifying condition (such as medical records, office visit summaries, or an official letter from a physician declaring your diagnosis) before meeting with a physician to obtain your medical marijuana card.
