Former Detroit Lions Make Play For Michigan Marijuana

Former Detroit Lions lineman Rob Sims and wide receiver Calvin “Megatron” Johnson, are investors in a massive indoor grow facility in Michigan near the Michigan/Indiana border.

Two Former Detroit Lions have teamed up again – this time, to invest in Michigan’s thriving marijuana industry.

Former Lineman Rob Sims and wide receiver Calvin “Megatron” Johnson, are investors in a 12,000-square-foot indoor grow facility, just outside of Webberville, Michigan. The pair also looks to open their first medical/recreational marijuana retail location by the end of November, 10 minutes from the Indiana border, in Niles.

They realized they shared interests in entrepreneurship as teammates in Detroit and have since turned their focus to Michigan real estate investment properties. And though quiet about its use in their playing days, both admit that they used marijuana to treat their pain off the gridiron.

“It was more natural and holistic than other options, such as opioids, for pain and inflammation,” Johnson told the South Bend Tribune. “Other options are needed that are less damaging or addictive.”

“We think it could help with MS, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases,” Sims said. “There might be additional medical benefits that we don’t know about but are worth investigating.”

They chose the location in Niles because of the size of the building, good parking, and proximity to the Indiana border. Local officials are excited about the venture.

The city is “always taking emails for vendors interested in grows, processing, transport, and labs,” said Sanya Vitale, Niles community development director, who noted that the industry has already created more jobs.
