The Michigan Cannabis Industry Association (MCIA) petitions the state to classify medical marijuana as an “essential item” and authorize physicians to certify medical patients via telemed platforms throughout the COVID-19 crisis.
Here’s a snip bit, of what the MCIA wrote in a letter to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer:
“To further reduce the risk of exposure we respectfully request that the state swiftly allow physicians to evaluate patients and write recommendations for both new medical marijuana patients and renewing patients using telecommunications,” the letter said. “This action which is not currently available to us will help flatten the curve by keeping our most vulnerable patients at home.”
Why is this important and what does this mean?
Such a classification would deem Michigan dispensary’s as medically essential. Allowing for Michigan dispensaries to remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic. This would expand patients access to their medical marijuana physician. By allowing patients to conduct their regular appointments over the phone or via the web. In short, if the state approves it, the doctor could see new patients and renewals soon using telemedicine.
