The other 4 Alabama Vertically Integrated Business Licenses were granted to Trulieve AL, Sustainable Alabama, Flowerwood Medical Cannabis and Specialty Medical Products of Alabama.
Robertson has expressed his readiness to proceed. However, multiple lawsuits and a restraining orders have halted progress. Robertson shared his frustrations on Alabama Public Television’s Capitol Journal.

Legal Disputes Impacting Alabama Medical Cannabis News: Perspectives and Hopes for Resolution
AMCC Director John McMillan echoed this sentiment, expressing his own frustration with the delays. “Nobody’s more frustrated than our commission and our staff, because frankly, in my opinion, most of these lawsuits are frivolous,” McMillan told Todd Stacy on Capitol Journal. He believes the lawsuits are deliberate attempts to block the commission’s efforts and delay the program’s implementation.
However, William Somerville, an attorney for Alabama Always, one of the companies denied a license, offers a different perspective.
“The commission violated the law in numerous ways, and continues to violate the law,” Somerville stated.
He argues that the delays are due to the commission’s failure to comply with legal requirements, suggesting that adherence to the law would expedite the process.
Joey Robertson, while acknowledging some initial lawsuits were not frivolous.
We all can agree that the ongoing legal battles are prolonging the delays.
McMillan remains hopeful that within a few months, the courts will provide some resolution, allowing Alabama dispensaries and integrators to join other licensed entities and finally get the program up and running.
